THE PAGE–WOOTTERS MECHANISM AND THE MULTIVERSE OF SELF:A Relational Theory of Time, Identity, and Becoming

Abstract

This paper presents a synthesis between the Page–Wootters mechanism from quantum gravity and the Multiverse of Self, a psychological-philosophical model of identity, temporal experience, and human becoming. The Page–Wootters mechanism argues that the universe is fundamentally timeless and that the flow of time arises only from relationships between different parts of the system. The Multiverse of Self similarly proposes that the self is not a fixed, singular entity but a dynamic constellation of potential identities activated through perception, memory, meaning, and choice. By integrating these frameworks, this paper demonstrates that time and identity share a common relational structure: both emerge from correlations rather than existing as independent, objective entities. This synthesis has profound implications for understanding trauma, neurodivergence, mental health, and therapeutic change.


1. Introduction

One of the most challenging problems in theoretical physics and psychology is the nature of time and identity. Physics seeks to reconcile quantum mechanics with general relativity, while psychology seeks to explain how individuals maintain a coherent sense of self despite constant biological, emotional, and cognitive change. Surprisingly, both fields have arrived at the same conclusion: the phenomena we experience most personally—time and identity—may not be fundamental features of the universe. Instead, they may be relational constructs.

The Page–Wootters mechanism, developed in 1983, offered a radical solution to a long-standing paradox in quantum gravity. When the entire universe is described by quantum laws, the resulting mathematical expression predicts a reality with no time at all. Rather than rejecting this conclusion, Page and Wootters proposed that time does not exist on the universal level. Instead, time appears only when observers within the universe measure changes in another subsystem functioning as a clock.

The Multiverse of Self, developed by Lyons (2023–2025), proposes an analogous idea in psychology: that identity is not fundamental or fixed, but emerges from the relationship between perception, memory, narrative, and choice. Individuals do not “have” a single self; instead, they inhabit a field of possible selves activated through moment-to-moment correlations.

This paper argues that these frameworks are deeply compatible. Both models treat their respective domains—time and identity—as emergent, relational, and observer-dependent. Bringing them together yields a unified theory of consciousness, becoming, and psychological change.


2. The Page–Wootters Mechanism Explained in Words

When physicists try to combine quantum mechanics with general relativity, they encounter a problem: the resulting mathematical system predicts a universe with no passage of time. The usual equations that describe change simply do not apply when the entire universe is considered at once. Instead, the universe appears as a single, static informational structure.

Rather than dismissing this as an error, Page and Wootters suggested that a timeless universe can still give rise to time for observers within it. They proposed that time emerges through comparison. In their view:

  • The universe as a whole does not evolve.
  • But if one part of the universe is designated as a “clock,” and another part is treated as the “system of interest,” then the two can be compared.
  • When the state of the system changes in correlation with different readings of the clock, it creates the appearance of time flowing.

In other words, time is not absolute. It arises because an observer measures changes in one subsystem relative to another subsystem. Time is therefore relational rather than fundamental.

This interpretation was experimentally supported decades later when physicists showed that two entangled photons can exhibit “temporal evolution” with respect to one another, even though the pair as a whole remains in a non-evolving state. One photon serves as the clock, the other as the system, and the relationship between them creates the appearance of time.

Page and Wootters described time as a conditional perception—something that appears when an observer conditions their view on a particular subsystem. From outside the universe, nothing changes. From inside the universe, everything does.


3. Overview of the Multiverse of Self Theory

The Multiverse of Self proposes that the human self is not singular. Instead, identity is a collection of potential configurations shaped by experience, memory, trauma, aspiration, biology, and culture. The self that emerges in any moment is the result of:

  • which memories are referenced
  • which emotions are active
  • which narratives are engaged
  • which possibilities are imagined
  • which choices are emphasized
  • which values are foregrounded

This theory argues that human identity is not linear or fixed. Instead, it resembles a vast field of latent possibilities. At any given moment, consciousness “selects” a configuration based on internal reference points. Identity is constructed relationally, not absolutely.

The theory also proposes that the sense of time is constructed in a similar way. Humans do not directly perceive past and future; they reconstruct them through memory and prediction. What we call “time” is an interpretive structure emerging from comparison between present perception, past recollection, and anticipated possibility.

In this sense, the Multiverse of Self asserts that both time and identity are interpretations of relational data, not independent realities.


4. Structural Parallels Between Page–Wootters and the Multiverse of Self

4.1 A Timeless Underlying Reality

In Page–Wootters, the universe as a whole exists in one timeless state. In the Multiverse of Self, the full field of possible identities also exists timelessly.

In both cases, the fundamental level of reality is a complete, static structure.

4.2 Emergence Through Comparison

Page–Wootters shows that time arises when an observer compares the state of one subsystem to the state of a clock.

The Multiverse of Self proposes that identity arises when consciousness compares present awareness to internal reference points such as memory, emotion, narrative, or imagined futures.

In both models, the observer creates order and continuity by making comparisons.

4.3 Superpositions of Possibility

In quantum physics, a system can exist in a superposition of all possible configurations until measured.

In the Multiverse of Self, the psyche contains superposed potentials: the brave self, the wounded self, the creative self, the logical self, the addicted self, the healed self, the future self.

Experience emerges when consciousness “selects” one configuration based on internal conditions.

4.4 Conditional Experience

Page–Wootters shows that the state of the universe “at a given time” is produced by conditioning the universal state on the state of the clock.

The Multiverse of Self proposes that the experienced identity in any moment is produced by conditioning the total potential self on internal psychological states.

Identity is not discovered; it is selected.


5. Implications for Trauma, Neurodivergence, and Mental Health

Trauma, psychosis, schizoaffective disorder, autism, and other forms of neurodivergence often include disturbances in time perception and disruptions in identity continuity.

The Page–Wootters mechanism explains this elegantly: if time is relational, then altering the internal “clock systems” alters the flow of time itself.

Similarly, the Multiverse of Self suggests that identity emerges from internal comparisons. When trauma locks a person into a particular memory or emotional state, they continually “condition” their present identity on that internal state. The result is identity rigidity.

In this integrated model:

  • Trauma is a collapse into a narrow relational clock.
  • Dissociation is the failure of internal subsystems to correlate.
  • Anxiety is the overactivation of predictive clocks.
  • Depression is the conditioning on hopeless or inactive clocks.
  • Addiction is a repetitive attachment to a single loop of internal states.
  • Healing is the expansion of available internal reference points.
  • Growth is the stable correlation with healthier internal states.

This framework reframes mental health not as malfunction but as a shift in the relational structures that generate identity and time.


6. Toward a Unified Relational Theory of Consciousness

When combined, these two models propose a powerful unified picture:

  • At the fundamental level, both time and identity are static possibility structures.
  • Experience arises from the act of relating one part of the system to another.
  • Temporal flow is not universal but emerges through internal correlations.
  • Identity is not universal but emerges through internal psychological correlations.
  • Becoming, the central process of human growth, is the ongoing recalibration of these correlations.

This unified theory suggests that consciousness is not a passive witness but an active operator that:

  1. chooses reference points
  2. compares relational states
  3. constructs continuity
  4. generates meaning
  5. shapes identity
  6. produces time
  7. navigates possibility

This gives the Multiverse of Self a powerful scientific backbone: it becomes a psychologically grounded analogue to relational time in physics.


7. Conclusion

The Page–Wootters mechanism shows that time emerges from relationships between subsystems in a fundamentally timeless universe. The Multiverse of Self shows that identity emerges from relationships between internal psychological states in a fundamentally multi-possibility psyche. Integrating these frameworks yields a unified relational ontology: time, identity, and becoming arise through conditional comparisons rather than existing inherently.

This synthesis bridges quantum gravity, cognitive neuroscience, existential psychology, and trauma-informed therapy. It offers a profound lens for understanding human experience and a powerful foundation for developing new therapeutic models that honor both scientific rigor and the lived reality of mental health challenges.
